Owner of By Necessity Interior Design, Alice Karlstad grew up in the Chicago metropolitan area and later lived in the beautiful and historic town of Wellesley, Massachusetts in the greater Boston area before making her home in Knoxville, Tennessee for the last twenty-plus years. She has over seventeen years of professional interior design experience. Alice's creativity has been shown in nationwide interior design magazines and most recently was a contributing interior designer to the 2009 Parade of Homes (WindRiver). She specializes in adapting traditional American, Old World and Rustic Contemporary designs for the way Knoxvillians live today.
Alice has been managing residential interior design projects in East Tennessee since 1997, and is best known for her beautiful and custom designed window treatments and kitchen designs and remodels. Alice keeps current in her field by attending ASID meetings as well as traveling to Highpoint Market in North Carolina twice a year to view the latest trends in fabrics, home accents and furniture. She has access to AmericasMart in Atlanta (to the trade only) and ADAC (Atlanta Decorative Arts Center) which gives her access to all fabric manufacturers. She brings leadership, enthusiasm, and passion to every project - no matter what the size.
Here at By Necessity Interior Design, my goal is to work closely with my clients to determine and create an environment that is a reflection of their needs - whether it is a single room or an entire home. I believe in open communication as a key to achieving your desired results and I pride myself on meeting budget and scheduling requirements. As a member of a local interior design consortium, Design Source & Associates, I have wide and complete access to a variety of vendors and services for all your design needs.
